Philip Treacy Fashion Show Opening: Lady Gaga in Bebaroque and Undercover
Posted on Monday, September 17, 2012
It’s been 13 years since Philip Treacy‘s last show in London. And when I saw the photos from his Spring 2013 runway, I wished I could have been at the Royal Courts of Justice last night.
Big dose of the 80′s in his very personal tribute to the global fashion icons Michael Jackson, Alexander McQueen and Isabella Bow.
The outfits used on the runway, including the original “Thriller” leather jacket, were lent from the collection of Michael Jackson’s long time designers Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush. These bespoke pieces have not been seen since Michael wore them on stage and in his videos. This very special collection is set to be auctioned in California on December 2, 2012 at the Julien’s Auctions Beverly Hills Gallery as part of their annual Icons & Idols auction.
When asked about the collection, Philip told WWD: “It was based on Africa getting rich. A future Africa and they just happen to be wearing Michael Jackson’s clothes. Jackson was exceptional — his talent, the dancing, the image, and I was touched to be able to work with his clothes. They were at my studio for a month before the show, and they were really freaking me out. I’d lift up a box, and there’d be a sparkly glove” .
Head to Vogue to watch a behind the scenes at Philip Treacy SS13 show video (including the box) and to Elle, to see the entire collection.
Gaga opened the show with “Ladies and gentlemen, the greatest milliner in the world: Philip Treacy”, wearing “Anastasiya” Mesh Bodysuit and Leggings from Bebaroque Fall 2012 “Tsarina” collection, inspired by the Russian empire and royal opulence.
“Anastasiya”, featuring hand embroidered floral appliqué combining boasting petrol toned bugle beads with clear and royal blue tone crystals, is the crown design of the collection.
The floor-length hot pink burka is from Undercover by Jun Takahashi Spring 2003 “Scab” collection. The sheer all body covering garment was one of the finale numbers of Paris debut fashion show of the cult label.
The burka Gaga wore belonged to Isabella Blow and it was one of the standouts of her incomparable collection of couture (including 50 custom-made Philip Treacy hats) set to be auctioned off at Christie’s exactly two years ago, but finally purchased entirely (thanks God) by Daphne Guinness who didn’t want the collection being “scattered to the four winds” because it “is like a diary, a journey of a life, and a living embodiment of the dearest, most extraordinary friend”.
Gaga accessorized the look with Pearl Tiara from Susan Caplan Vintage Collection, her custom made Pleaser boots and one of the handcrafted Christmas Star rings seen on Philip Treacy‘s Spring 2013 runway, created with Swarovski Elements (Swarovski supported Philip Treacy‘s show, both labels have had a long-standing partnership which began when Isabella Blow introduced Philip Treacy to Nadja Swarovski in the late nineties).
