The Born This Way Ball Costumes: Salvatore Salamone for Lady Gaga, part 2

Posted on Thursday, August 23, 2012

Back in June I told you the white leather helmet Gaga wears on stage with Tex Saverio peplum jacket and Perry Meek skirt was custom created for the Born This Way Ball by Salvatore Salamone.

Today I’m going to share with you the making of details.

After receiving a brief from Gaga’s fashion team, Salvatore did various sketches: “For this piece I went in kind of a sci-fi direction but tried to keep a clean and modern panache”.

The following step was to refine the sketches Gaga liked: “I refined them with a 3D model just to make clear exactly what I am going to build (I have since made a 3D model of Gaga’s entire body that I use to build the pieces on)”, Salvatore told me during our brief but get together, adding: “Making the 3D model on the computer is another step but I find it invaluable to really get a sense of the lines and it just gives you much more control and foresight over the final piece. When everyone is happy with the 3D model I start the build in the real world”.

Click HERE to see the turntable animation Salvatore did in zbrush just to flesh out the design.

Since many of you have been asking me about what is the headpiece made of, precisely the material used was my next question.

Salvatore “built the buck for the headpiece in foam and covered it with fiberglass to get it smooth and then pulled the leather over it. The cowl (which changed lengths after the 3D model during the process) was flat patterned and made in leather”.

And here comes the original initial sketch I was kindly sent. Just for your eyes!

The “FAME” Trailer Fashion Credits, part 2: Salvatore Salamone for Lady Gaga

Posted on Friday, August 17, 2012

As you already know, the black crown Gaga wears in the “FAME” trailer while emerging from giant black mouth, was custom made for the commercial by Los Angeles based sculptor and special effects costume designer & fabricator, Salvatore Salamone.

The crown, an exclusive photo of you can see below, is an aluminum and foam frame covered in aqua resin then coated with black epoxy.

Salvatore created another one-of-a-kind accessory Gaga wears on the stage of her Born This Way Ball shows I’m going to share more details about with you tomorrow!
